Auckland: the city of Sails

Auckland, New Zealand: Where City, Wilderness and Stories Collide

They call Auckland ‘Tāmaki Makaurau’ — the city of a hundred lovers, desired by many. And it's easy to see why.

It's the only city in the world built on a field of 53 dormant volcanoes, where you can sip a flat white in a heritage bookshop on Ponsonby Road in the morning, watch a colony of 1,200 gannets soar over black-sand cliffs at Muriwai by afternoon, and hear the bell-like song of a Korimako while the iconic Tūī shows off its white poi in a pōhutukawa tree.

Auckland isn't just New Zealand's biggest city. It's a gateway.

In this blog, we go beyond the skyline.

We’ll taste our way through the city — from steaming hāngī pulled from the earth to fresh green-lipped mussels and the humble meat pie that every Kiwi swears by.

We’ll escape the city without actually leaving it, wandering the pest-free sanctuaries of ‘Tiritiri Matangi and Tāwharanui’, where rare birds like the Takahē and Tīeke / Saddleback have been brought back from the edge of extinction, and the black sands of the west coast that feel like another planet.

We’ll meet the locals with wings — (seven iconic birds) you can spot in a single weekend if you know where to look, from the tiny, fearless Pīwakawaka (fantail) that will dance around you to the shy, fuzzy North Island Brown Kiwi that only comes out after dark.

And finally, we’ll slow down. Because a city that loves stories needs bookshops. We’ll step into the independent bookshops of High Street, Mt Eden and Ponsonby — places like Unity Books and The Women's Bookshop that have been curating Auckland's soul since the 1980s, one shelf at a time.

🐦 Birds to See in Auckland

Auckland isn't just a city of yachts, it's a city of wings. Built on volcanoes and surrounded by islands, the region is home to over 200 bird species. If you're visiting, don't miss these seven:

1. Tūī

A glossy black bird with a white tuft at its throat. Auckland's rockstar singer — it can produce two notes at once. You'll hear its complex song everywhere, especially around Mt Eden and Cornwall Park.

2. Kererū (New Zealand Wood Pigeon)

A large, colourful and rather clumsy pigeon. It loves feijoa and guava so much it sometimes gets too full to fly straight. Locals affectionately call it the "drunk pigeon."

3. Pīwakawaka (Fantail)

A tiny, friendly bird that often follows you on forest tracks, fanning its tail like a fan. In Māori culture, it's seen as a bringer of good luck.

4. Australasian Gannet / Takapu – Muriwai Colony

Visit the Muriwai gannet colony on the west coast, home to 1,200 pairs nesting on black volcanic cliffs. Best from October to February. With a 2-metre wingspan, they dive into the sea at over 100 km/h.

5. Tīeke (Saddleback) & Takahē

Rare treasures found only on predator-free islands. Take the 75-minute ferry to ‘Tiritiri Matangi Island’. The Takahē was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 1948 and is now a symbol of New Zealand conservation.

6. Kiwi (North Island Brown Kiwi)

The national icon, nocturnal and shy. Hard to see in the wild, but you can hear it on night walks at (Tāwharanui and Shakespear Regional Parks). For a guaranteed sighting, visit Auckland Zoo's Te Wao Nui.

7. Korimako (Bellbird)

Named for its clear, bell-like call. Best heard at dawn in the lush forests of the Waitākere Ranges.

Top 3 Birding Plans:

  • Quick City Trip: Auckland Domain + Mt Eden for Tūī, Kererū, and Fantails

  •  Best Day Trip:* Tiritiri Matangi Island for 10+ rare native species

  • For Sunset: Muriwai Gannet Colony
